Tigers camping across Texas

The Missouri coaching staff participated in its second day of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Mega Camp on Friday. The first session took place in San Antonio in the morning while the second session in Katy, Texas hosted 641 high school players Friday evening.

First year head coach Barry Odom said he goes into each camp with the same approach.

“In a day and a half we’ve been able to instruct and be around 1,000 kids,” said Odom. “That’ll continue over the next ten days for us and it’s a great opportunity to work, teach and promote the game of football.”

Previous Missouri coach Gary Pinkel made a living on finding unknown talent, especially in Texas. Odom believes these camps are a great way to find out of state talent, and give exposure to the university.

“There’s a lot of great players particularly in Texas and the opportunity for us to put Mizzou brand and the SEC brand is gonna be huge for our program moving forward,” he said following Friday's camp.

Satellite camps are currently a controversial issue in college football for numerous reasons. Some say the size of the camps could take away from players actually gaining anything of real worth. Odom believes these camps are essential for instructing and promoting the game of football. He said he would welcome a turnout just as large as the one at Rhodes Stadium in Katy on a regular basis.

Odom said the camps are a great opportunity to evaluate players already on their radar as well as find undiscovered talent.

The Tigers will stay in Texas with camps in Dallas and Tyler on Saturday before returning to the Show-Me State for camps in St. Louis (Sunday) and Kansas City (Tuesday). Other satellite camps will be held in Illinois, Atlanta and Birmingham.
