Mauk done at Mizzou

Listen to Gary Pinkel talk about Maty Mauk and his own career on the PowerMizzou.com Podcast from Thursday afternoon

In a statement from Barry Odom, the University of Missouri announced Maty Mauk's playing days at Mizzou are finished. The junior quarterback has been dismissed from the program.

“I met with Maty Mauk this morning and informed him of my decision to permanently dismiss him from the football program. When I met with Maty back in December, I wanted to give him an opportunity for a fresh start, but I also made it very clear what our expectations would be moving forward. After gathering information and speaking with a number of individuals this week, it is clear Maty has failed to live up to those expectations by violating team rules in recent weeks.

As for the video appearing on social media this week, it is concerning, but we believe it is from a long time ago. However, Maty’s failure to live up to expectations in recent weeks was the reason for this decision.

We believe it is in his best interest to focus on his personal life and his academic career at this time. We remain committed to helping him work through the challenges and earn his degree. Our hope is that he will grow from this and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Mauk went 14-4 as a starter in 2013 and 2014, helping Missouri to the SEC Championship Game in both seasons. He started the 2015 season 3-1. His final game was a 21-13 loss to Kentucky on September 26.

Three days later, Mauk was indefinitely suspended by then head coach Gary Pinkel. That suspension lasted four weeks. Mauk was reinstated on October 25, but was then suspended for the remainder of the season on November 1. No reason was publicly given for Mauk's suspension, other than a violation of team rules, though multiple media reports tied the suspension to an altercation outside a downtown Columbia bar the same night that he had been reinstated.

Pinkel retired following Missouri's season and Mauk was temporarily reinstated to participate in team activities by interim head coach Andy Hill. On December 23rd, Odom announced that Mauk was back in the program and would be given the same opportunity as every other player to compete for playing time.

On Monday of this week, a video surfaced on Twitter appearing to show Mauk snorting a powdery white substance off a table. Later that night, Odom and Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades issued a joint statement that Mauk was again indefinitely suspended, his third such penalty in less than four months.

It is unknown when the video was taken. One report, citing teammates, indicated that the video was approximately two years old. Sources have indicated to PowerMizzou.com that it was from late summer of 2015. Either way, it appears to have taken place prior to Mauk's most recent reinstatement to the team.

After the release of the video, some of Mauk's teammates voiced their support on Twitter. The tweet below is from receiver Keyon Dilosa.

Odom met with Mauk on Thursday morning, between recruiting trips and the decision was announced following that meeting.

The dismissal leaves Missouri with just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Eddie Printz announced he was transferring earlier this week.

With less than a week before National Signing Day, Missouri officials said that there would not be further comment beyond the release on Thursday.

Around 2 pm, Mauk released a statement on Twitter:
